To determine if you would be a candidate for implants, Dr. Williams will perform a 3-D CT scan of the jaw- bone structure. From the scan, it can be determined if there is adequate bone to secure the implant(s) in the desired locations for the final prosthesis. Location to critical structures in the area of the implant, such as sinus cavities and nerves in the area, also has to be known so they can be avoided during the placement. Once the implant is placed, the bone then integrates around the implant securing it in place.
In our opinion, dental implants represent one of the greatest advancements in dentistry. Implants are made of titanium, the same material used for most artificial joints such as hips and knees. They have a proven track record of success over more than 40 years. In the past twenty years, they have become a commonly utilized option for restoring teeth. Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, support a fixed bridge, secure a removable denture, or replace teeth in an entire arch utilizing 4-6 implants. For fixed-into-place restorations attached to implants, they offer great security, function, and aesthetics as close to natural teeth that we have to offer.
Surgical Phase & Placement
While other dentists may refer to a specialist, we are able to perform the surgical phase and placement of dental implants in-house. Dr. Deepa Williams, DDS is skilled in Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics, and minor oral surgical procedures. Her expertise allows her to perform extractions and extensive bone grafting (if needed) for dental implants as well as planning and custom healing abutments as provisional crowns. Dr. Williams closely monitors the healing process for all of our patients, checking to make sure the area heals properly and that there are no signs of infection. Often, the feedback we receive from our patients is that the implant surgery is less uncomfortable than having a tooth removed.
Once healing is complete, the patient returns to our office to complete the restoration process. The restoration process usually goes quite smoothly because of the advanced planning done prior to starting and Dr. Williams’ expertise.
